driverless autonomous truck

Without anyone in the driver’s seat, Waymo recently unlocked the potential of fully self-driving technology. In an area of the Phoenix, Arizona, metro region, a subset of their fleet operates in fully autonomous mode. That means if you looked at the vehicle moving down the road next to you,Waymo (not The Invisible Man) is the sole driver.

Now, Waymo is doing the same thing in Atlanta, Georgia, with self-driving trucks. How might this technology affect the trucking industry for the future? That’s an interesting question to ponder.

Waymo first began this experiment as a Google project in 2009, autonomously driving cars. Those cars traveled more than 3.5 MILLION miles across 20 US city public roads.

Turning their attention to trucks to deliver things rather than people, Waymo will launch a pilot experiment of driverless trucks in Atlanta. Their self-driving trucks will carry freight bound for Google’s data centers. Now if that’s not something out of the cartoon show The Jetsons, I don’t know what is.

Pros and Cons of Self Driving Trucks to the Trucking Industry

Pro for logistic companies: Transport schedule cannot be affected by human frailty, such as sleep or illness.

Con for logistics companies: Driverless cars still might have mechanical or electrical breakdowns, like any technological equipment.

Pro for logistics companies: These breakdowns are becoming less and less frequent as the technology advances.

Con for the logistics companies: Can have a detrimental effect on employees who tie their self-worth to the situation of being replaced by a machine.

Pro for the logistics companies: This can increase the interest in your company, and bring in new customers who want to try the driverless delivery fleet.

Con for the logistics companies: With the equality movement going on today, the ethics department creating guidelines for difficult situations could conceivably come under fire, and drag you into the middle of this hot button topic.

Keep watching for more robo-car and robo-truck news. It’s definitely a hot topic in today’s headlines.
